About Us
MEL provides a wide range of solutions to meet the power needs of customers in diverse industries. The majority of the generators are diesel-fuelled while the domestic version which is widely used by small businesses runs on Liquid Petroleum Gasoline (LPG).
The generator product portfolio ranges from 5 kVA up to 6.2 MVA primarily sourced by KOEL in India and Kohler Power Systems, USA. These generators conform to US Tier 1/11 and Euro II emission norms. The key strength of these products is low operating cost, minimal maintenance and fuel economy due to the efficiency of power output. The range includes power generators, diesel engines, marine power generators and marine auxiliary engines.
Additionally, the Company has established its presence in the electrical engineering industry through the manufacture of panels for power generators including the provision of circuit breakers (Moulded Case Circuit Breakers), power contactors and changeover switches and power distribution panels. This is further enhanced by the local production of high-quality soundproofing canopies and other value-added electrical equipment using the strength and technical expertise of the engineering staff.
The Company has identified the existence of significant opportunities to expand further in the field of electrical engineering as it complements MEL’s existing business. Due to the overall market growth in the construction industry such as high rise buildings, highways, marine projects, power projects, MEL is able to competitively cater to diverse electrical engineering requirements in the country.
To further ensure Sri Lanka's energy independence, MEL has started to transform from being a fossil fuel-based to a renewable energy company, and we have begun investing massively in the development of offshore wind/solar farms and at the same time, began converting our product portfolio to sustainable biomass, renewable power, adding significant wind and solar assets.
The future looks bright for onshore wind. Thanks to new technologies and increasing demand. Solar and Wind power is cheaper than fossil-fuel power in two-thirds of the world. In the coming years, we’re dedicated to diversifying our renewable energy portfolio, with an ambition to grow our global footprint.
Our business transformation is a story of technological innovation, steep learning curves, and difficult strategic choices. Our fundamental objective was to transform our business from one based on fossil fuels to one based on renewable energy and to find a business model that is both environmentally and financially sustainable.
But our transformation is a drop in the ocean and is far from complete. If we as a global society, are going to reduce carbon emissions in line with the scientific advice, every country and every company needs to speed up action on climate change.
Solar and Storage Centres
As Sri Lanka is blessed with several forms of renewable energy resources, warranted by geo-climatic conditions in the island, in recent years, solar and storage portfolio has grown significantly. We believe utility-scale solar and battery storage will deliver electricity with increased value to the grid.
Onshore/Offshore Wind Energy
The wind is a free and unlimited resource and it has the potential to meet all our energy needs.
The windy land in Sri Lanka represents about 6% of the total land area (65,600 km2) of Sri Lanka. Using a conservative assumption of 5 MW per km2, this windy land could support almost 20,000 MW of potential installed capacity. If the windy lagoons are included, the total theoretical wind potential increases to approximately 24,000 MW.
Small Scale Hydroelectric Energy
Hydropower without dams and reservoirs means producing at a smaller scale, typically from a facility designed to operate in a river without interfering in its flow. It is also called "run-of-the-river" projects. Many consider small-scale hydro a more environmentally-friendly option.
Small-scale micro-hydropower projects can make a big difference to communities in remote locations.
